Naoki Kawamoto is the Managing Director of Idemitsu Australia Resources Pty Ltd (“IAR”).
With a background as a Mining Engineer and qualifications from Kyushu University, his 30-years of experience spans Japan, China and Australia, and extends across the entire value chain, from marketing, to mine and logistics development and to coal utilisation technologies.
Naoki credits Idemitsu’s compelling value chain to a combination of (1) facilities operated by a highly skilled and engaged workforce, (2) high grade thermal and (3) coking coal mine assets and Idemitsu’s research laboratory in Tokyo Bay.
IAR has been operating in Australia since 1978 and owns coal mining operations in Queensland and New South Wales. The combined operations at Ensham, Boggabri and Muswellbrook mines support more than 1,400 local jobs and produce about 14 million tonnes per year of thermal and semi-soft PCI coals for export, predominantly to Asian markets.
IAR continues to develop its assets in Australia through existing operations and greenfield sites, and by playing a proactive role in diversifying Australia’s energy portfolio through renewable initiatives.
IAR’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its people, working with local communities, and ensuring the sustainability of the environment is anchored in the 100-year history and teachings of its founder, Sazo Idemitsu. Even today, Sazo Idemitsu’s philosophy underpins the Core Values of the Australian business: ‘We put people first – We do what we say we’ll do – We are always improving’.
