The use of conventional Load Haul Dump (LHD) units and scrapers on an uneven mine floors underground leaves behind a significant portion of metal (or precious stones) contained in the already capitally developed and broken ore stocks. When removing already broken ore with LHDs and scrapers from the mine floors, due to the “milling” effect by LHDs and scrapers, a significant grade increase occurs with the gold and metals landing on the bottom of uneven mine floors. From the Ausvac Mining P/L practical trials experience, the broken ore material normally left behind is up to 0.5 metres thick – i.e. that material is never recovered and hidden by mine management in various “camouflaging” reconciliation factors – i.e. it is purely wasted, when using conventional mining equipment referred to above. The portion of metal or precious stones contained in the conventionally “unrecoverable” floor material is included in the initial calculations of ore reserves to be mined, when a mining project is being evaluated and capital funds are sought for its development.

The underground mine floor vacuuming technology with small semi-mobile/low productivity vacuum cleaners has been successfully introduced and used in South Africa and other countries for many years as a part of a “normal” mining cycle, including vacuuming the gold left behind in the floor cracks in semi-horizontal stoping excavations.

Stationary Supersuckers/giant vacuum cleaners have been successfully used to mine opals in Coober Pedy Region in South Australia since the late 60-ties of the last century and for the surface shaft sinking in Australia down to 100m+ in depth.
