Since 2015 more than 55% of Chinese global investment has been in energy and resources projects, and Australia has been the largest benefactor. But why Australia?
“Australia is the lucky country. It’s also the empty country in that deposits are easier to find. It’s got infrastructure, high quality professional bodies, major multi-nationals with a large presence, and world-class locals,” Mr Morgan said.
The people aspect was equally important, as China works to develop its own human capital.
“Chinese companies are learning from Australians on energy and resource development, and using Australian operations as a training ground to bring the talent back into the country.”
Chinese investment and construction worldwide has seen significant growth since the turn of the millennium, and is currently estimated to be valued at USD 1.7 trillion*.
